About the Museum
About the Founder
Founder and Director Choon-soon Park, Ph.D. in East Asian Aesthetics, has devoted herself to expanding and cultivating local culture and the arts on Ganghwa Island—an area long characterized as both a culturally under-resourced region and a population-declining area. Working within these challenging conditions, she has actively contributed to broadening access to cultural life while reshaping the prevailing perception of museums as distant or exclusive institutions.
By lowering institutional barriers and creating an environment in which people can naturally encounter and communicate with art, she established a new model for community-oriented cultural spaces. In recognition of these achievements, she received the 2014 Best Creative Management Award in Korea, hosted by The Korea Times and supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning. In 2015, she was honored with the Proud Sungkyun Person Award, jointly presented by the Sungkyunkwan University Foundation and the Sungkyunkwan University Alumni Association, followed by the Proud Museum Professional Award in 2022, presented by the Korea Museum Association.
From 2023 to 2025, she served as the President of the Korea Private Art Museum Association. In 2025, she was awarded the Presidential Commendation, a government honor presented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in recognition of her distinguished contributions to developing museums and art galleries in Korea.
The Haeden Museum stands as the culmination of the founder’s long-standing conviction and enduring passion for the advancement of culture and the arts.
About Haeden Museum
Established in May 2013, the Haeden Museum is a premier multipurpose cultural and arts venue nestled in a stunning natural setting.
With a vision of being “an accessible museum, an open museum,” it consistently endeavors to enhance public engagement with culture and the arts. Located on a feng shui–favored site in Ganghwa, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, the museum boasts modern architecture characterized by its understated elegance and ideal exhibition environment. Through displays of works by globally acclaimed artists and high-quality thematic exhibitions that capture the essence of each era, the Haeden Museum aims to share and communicate the dynamic world of art and contemporary cultural values. Beyond its role as an exhibition space, the museum aspires to be a hub for profound cultural experiences and education.
In 2019, the Haeden Museum was certified by the Ministry of Education as an Education Donation Career Experience Institution and has since been involved in the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education’s 〈Dream Path〉 program, aiding youth in career exploration. The museum continually develops and offers a diverse array of educational programs and workshops for students, educators, and the local community, creating opportunities for future generations to broaden their perspectives through art. To support these initiatives, the education wing was expanded in 2017 to include a 144-seat auditorium and a versatile classroom with sliding partitions. These facilities accommodate large-scale lectures, performances, and innovative educational programs, featuring professional soundproofing, large screens, and projection systems. Additionally, by offering experiential cultural and arts tourism content in partnership with the Incheon Metropolitan Government and the Incheon Tourism Organization through the Unique Venue and Wellness Tourism Projects, the Haeden Museum actively contributes to the revitalization of local culture and tourism. Through expertly curated exhibitions, cultural and arts education, youth-oriented programs, and public collaboration initiatives, the Haeden Museum will continue to evolve as an open cultural and arts platform that grows alongside the local community.
Architecture Introduction
Selected as one of the “Best 7 Architecture of the Year” in Korea (2013)
The “Best 7 Architecture of the Year” award is Korea’s most prestigious architectural honor, presented by the Korean Institute of Architects. Each year, it recognizes seven buildings completed domestically that demonstrate outstanding architectural achievement while contributing to artistic expression and realizing public values.
Upon its opening, the Haeden Museum building was selected as one of the Best 7 Architecture of the Year in 2013 and received recognition for its architectural excellence. Designed by architect Bae Daeyong, the museum has been highly praised for its harmonious integration with the surrounding natural landscape and its architectural approach, which emphasizes openness and engagement with the external environment.
Three gardens—the Mirror Garden, Secret Garden, and Healing Garden—each developed around themes of harmony with artworks, healing, and nature-centered meditation, have become additional symbolic spaces in the museum. Among them, the Mirror Garden, finished with reflective surfaces, creates a distinctive landscape in which the sky, earth, forest, and sculptures are mirrored and layered together, producing a unique overlap between reality and art. This space is widely regarded as a photographic landmark of the museum.
